Simple Twirly Skirt

Every little girl needs a twirly skirt!
Maybe even 5 or 10:) This skirt is so simple you'll be whipping out a whole collection of them! And it only took me 1/4 yard to make this!

I received the darling fabric from Fabric Fascination as part of the Exchange Program over at Totally Tutorials and I just knew it had to be a summer skirt.
My model did not want to hold still to have her picture taken- can't blame her... This skirt is made to twirl not hold still:)

Ready to make your own???
Materials:
  • 1/4 yard main fabric
  • 1/8 yard contrast
  • Elastic
1. Cut out your pieces. I just cut a FQ in half, so I had two 9x22" pieces and that was perfect for my 2 year old. The trim is two 1.5 x 36" pieces. In general you want the skirt to be twice your kid's waist circumference and the trim to be 1.5x the skirt width. You need an extra .75" at the top of the skirt for the waistband.

2. With right sides together sew up the side seams of the skirt and the trim.

3. Fold the top edge of the skirt over 1/4" and then another 1/2" and press flat. Topstitch along the foldline to create your casing leaving a 1" gap. Thread the elastic through with a safety pin and then sew the gap shut.
4. Hem the bottom edge of the trim by folding over 1/4" twice and top stitching. Gather the top edge to match the width of the skirt.
5. With RST sew the the trim to the bottom edge of the skirt. Press the seam allowance up into the skirt and then top stitch just above the seam line to help the trim lay flat.
Finished and ready for twirling!

  4. What a cute skirt - and even cuter model! Adorable. I'd love to make one of these for my little girl but am a sewing novice. Can I just clarify that you hem only one edge of the trim? Will the other end (which I take it ends up inside the skirt) not fray?
